WINERY PROFILE | Clos Figueras

“(50% garnacha, 25% cabernet sauvignon, 15% mazuela [sic] and 10% syrah, according to the label; raised in 300- and 500-liter French oak casks): Opaque ruby. Smoky, spice-accented aromas of black raspberry and cherry, with slow-mounting florality and a touch of graphite. Chewy and focused, with youthful bitter cherry and dark berry flavors and a hint of candied licorice. Shows very good energy on the finish, which features notes of succulent herbs and violet. I also had the chance to re-visit the 2009 Font de la Figuera and 2008 Clos Figueres, and both wines are showing better than they did last year. The ’09 Font de la Figuera hasn’t evolved much over the last twelve months but it has picked up more floral character and is showing a bright streak of minerality that gives it uncommon freshness for this ripe vintage. The ’08 Clos Figueres has also become more floral in the last year and is showing intense bitter cherry and candied red fruit character, with supple framing tannins. It’s actually quite drinkable now but also has the structure to age.”
